Cell phone reviews:Samsung Gravity 3 and the Pantech Jest

Today we review two great messaging phones, the Samsung Gravity 3 and the Pantech Jest. If you don't mind tying yourself to a contract, either of these affordable devices could suit your needs.

The Samsung Gravity 3 is a cell phone for T-Mobile users that is aimed at messaging fans. Its full QWERTY keyboard, solid feature set, and affordable price make it an attractive buy. The Gravity 3 is available for $49.99 after a two-year contract with T-Mobile.

The Gravity's most basic features include a speakerphone, an alarm clock, a calculator, a timer, and a stopwatch. To keep you organized, the phone has a notepad, a calendar, a task scheduler, and a voice recorder. Those who either travel or work with overseas clients will find the world clock and converter to be useful tools.

The Gravity's phone book has a capacity of 1,000 contacts. You can add various phone numbers, email addresses, notes, and other useful data to each contact, in addition to allocating photos and ringtones, too. Contacts can be sorted into groups for easier access. There are 19 polyphonic ringtones that come pre-installed, but you can add more from T-Mobile. The same holds true for wallpapers and themes.

Moving on in the features list, we find the inclusion of stereo Bluetooth, which allows you to use the phone with stereo headsets, hands-free car kits, and more. PC syncing is supported, as are voice commands. If you are on the road frequently, the integrated GPS feature should lend you a helping hand.  The GPS works with TeleNav service to provide voice-guided directions. The Gravity 3 is 3G capable, and you can surf the net using the web browser. The browser allows you to view websites in either their desktop or mobile versions, and can also play content from sites such as YouTube.

There are a variety of ways to connect to others on the Gravity 3 that surpass the typical phone conversation. There is text and multimedia messaging, as well as instant messaging through popular services such as AIM, Yahoo, and Windows Live Messenger. You can also configure the phone for email purposes with standard accounts from providers such as Yahoo, Gmail, and more, as well as Exchange.

If you happen to be a music lover, the Gravity 3's MP3 player should be appealing. It's not too modern or flashy, but it will suffice for listening to music of most standard formats. You can create and edit playlists too. Video entertainment can be had while browsing the net, through sites like YouTube, as mentioned before. The T-Mobile store can offer additional entertainment with game downloads. As is, the Gravity 3 comes equipped with a handful of game demos.

An integrated 2-megapixel camera is the final feature worth mentioning. The camera takes photos of decent quality and can be tweaked with various resolutions, color effects, modes, and more. The camera is also capable of recording video. Video can either be shot during longer periods in standard mode, or in shorter increments for clips meant to be sent as multimedia messages.

The design of the Gravity 3 is attractive and should appeal to a younger demographic. It comes in either a marine blue or citrus white color scheme. The phone is a tad bulky, yet still portable enough to fit into a pocket. It officially measures 4.6 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick and weighs 4.3 ounces.  The front of the phone is dominated by a 2.4-inch display with 240 x 320 resolution. The display produces vibrant graphics suitable for all of the phone's uses.

Below the display is a navigational array and the keypad. All of the buttons are fair in size and responsive to the touch. Sliding the phone to the right reveals a full QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard has an interesting look, and is great for messaging fans who want to keep in touch with others while on the go.

It may not be the most sophisticated phone, but the Samsung Gravity 3 holds its own. Younger phone users looking for something with a well-rounded feature set and a physical keyboard for messaging should find the Gravity 3 to be a sufficiently capable device for their needs.
