Cell Phone Reviews: Samsung Gusto and Samsung Eternity II SGH-A597
(Page 1 of 2 )
Today we review two cell phones from the same manufacturer: the Samsung Gusto and Samsung Eternity II SGH-A597. Pitched at two very different kinds of customers, which you choose will depend in part on whether you place low price or extra capabilities at the top of your priorities for a cell phone.
The Samsung Gusto is a basic flip phone for Verizon Wireless subscribers. Aimed at those on a budget and seeking simplicity, the Gusto may underwhelm many potential buyers. Its main selling point is its affordability, as it is free after a two-year contract with the carrier.
The basic features of the Gusto include a speakerphone, a calculator, a stopwatch, and an alarm clock. A world clock is on board for those who travel or who are curious to see what time it is overseas. To help you stay organized, there is a note pad and a calendar.
The Gusto's phone book can store up to 1,000 contacts. There is room for multiple phone numbers, email addresses, notes, and more for each. Contacts can be separated into groups, as well as be given their own photo and ringtone. If you're not a fan of the 20 ringtones that come standard with the phone, you can download more from Verizon.
Moving up the features ladder we find Bluetooth with support for profiles such as stereo headsets and hands-free car kits. Voice commands are supported for easier use while driving or multitasking. Those who are on the road a lot will likely make use of the integrated GPS. When used with the VZ Navigator service, you can get voice-guided directions to ensure that you do not get lost when in an unknown territory.
One feature that is a bit out of the ordinary is the fake call tool. This can be activated by pressing the speaker button four times, and it will cause a fake phone number to pop up so you can pretend to be occupied. If you need to surf the web, there is a WAP browser that will let you do so on a limited basis. The browser does have Bing search, which is a nice touch.
Messaging options on the Gusto begin with the standard text and multimedia messaging. Instant messaging is also available for those who want to engage in quick chats. Email is handled by a mobile email feature that offers access to accounts from various providers such as AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, and more.
The Gusto's final feature worth mentioning is its integrated VGA camera that takes photos of decent quality. A variety of adjustable settings are available when capturing those special Kodak moments. Three different resolutions, various white balance settings, color effects, night vision, and more allow you to tweak your picture taking skills.
In terms of design, the Gusto is a fairly simple flip phone with a black and gray color scheme. It's portable enough to fit into a pocket with ease. Officially, the Gusto weighs 3.3 ounces and measures 3.8 inches tall by 1.9 inches wide by 0.76 inch thick. On the phone's lid is an external display that shows the date, time, caller ID, as well as the phone's status in terms of signal and battery strength.
Flipping the phone open reveals its 2-inch internal color display with 128 x 160 resolution. Although the display is not exactly mesmerizing, its graphics do suffice for such a simple phone. Below the display is a navigational array that works well for running through the user interface. The number keypad features keys that are of sufficient size and responsiveness. Obviously, those who text a lot will want to opt for a different phone with better options for messaging.
Overall, the Samsung Gusto is a decent choice for those needing a basic cell phone. It doesn't come with many special features, but it has just enough to satisfy casual users.
