Blackberry 8830 Review - Performance
Performance
The Blackberry 8830 performs well in just about every category. The
speaker phone is crisp and clear, as is the cell phone. The Bluetooth feature works without a hitch, although stereo Bluetooth headsets are not compatible with this device.
The processing and the Internet both work at relatively fast speeds. The
EV-DO feature is great at boosting Internet speeds. The media player works well, although it is a very basic interface. Music sounds good through the speaker phone or through headphones. Video clips are smooth thanks to the impressive processor in this device, and the display is large enough to watch short clips without straining your eyes.
The battery life of the 8830 is very impressive. The 1400 mAh battery is rated for 3.6 hours of talk time and 9 hours of stand-by time. Recent tests have shown that these numbers may be a bit conservative, with results showing 4.3 hours of talk time before needing a charge. One test even showed a stand-by time of 22 days. Of course, the battery life will be less when using any of the multimedia functions extensively.
Final Thoughts
For the traveling professional, or anyone who needs to keep in touch while traveling, this may be the smart phone that you have been waiting for. The RIM Blackberry 8830 "Cyclone" is a very solid device overall, and is one of the best smart phones on the market today. This phone has a great set of features such as "world coverage," GPS, media player, and a good interface. The performance of this device, including battery life and processing, is on par with any other smart phone on the market today.
The Blackberry name is one that has been around for a while and is continually improving with each successor.

The only minor complaint that I have with this device is the keyboard. The keys are a bit "mushy," and they are not spaced apart. This may make it tough for people with larger hands to really be efficient with this keyboard, and they may find themselves accidentally hitting multiple keys. For this reason alone, I would recommend that you check out the 8830 in person to see if the keyboard is a problem for you.
The $200 price tag of this phone seems very reasonable, and the service from Verizon and Sprint are both good. I would rate this phone an 8 out of 10, and I do recommend it.
