Features
One of the best features of this phone is one that I have already mentioned, and that is the CDMA and GSM network capability. This dual-mode technology is great for frequent travelers across the Atlantic. At this time, the 8830 provides voice coverage in 157 different countries and email capabilities in 62 countries. This phone also supports a GPS technology which is integrated into the phone. The GPS receiver used in the 8830 is the SiRFstarIII-LT, which is the same technology used in the 8800. The GPS service is currently available in the Sprint models but as of the date of this writing, this technology is not yet available in the Verizon model. Verizon will offer the GPS service very soon, in the 8830, according to people at Verizon.
The 8830 is more than just a cell phone, it is a multimedia device. This phone comes equipped as a music player that can play a variety of formats such as MP3, WMA, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB and MIDI. The user has the option of using any downloaded music clip as the ring tone for the phone. This phone is also capable of playing your favorite video clips which are in the following formats: MPEG4, WMV and H.263 files. The phone is equipped with 64 MB of memory, but more can be added via the micro SD slot. Photos and text documents may also be viewed with this device, although they cannot be modified.
This device comes fully equipped to support the EV-DO network which allows
for high speed Internet access from almost anywhere. The 8830 can act as a modem for your laptop by using the EV-DO technology. This is a great feature which is fast becoming standard on any high-end smart phone, and it is a must have for traveling professionals. Another wireless feature of the 8830 is Bluetooth 2.0, which allows for the use of hands-free devices with this phone.
The Blackberry 8830 supports up to 10 email accounts to keep you connected at all times. Email works great with this phone, but the web browser is not quite as appealing. Web sites which are not designed for mobile phone viewing are not easily viewed with this device. This has been a problem in past Blackberry models as well. The 312 MHz processor does work well, though, at processing all of the functions of this device at a relatively speedy pace.
Some other features included in the 8830 will help the user stay organized such as a calendar, organizer, calculator, and address book. Other standard features include vibrate mode, speaker phone, and a cool feature which pauses the music when a call comes in and resumes it once you hang up that call.
