If you're looking for a BlackBerry App sure to give you some peace of mind, look no further than the Jared Company's I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency). With just one touch, it gives access to all of the information you'd want available in an emergency.

We’ve all seen the scare tactics that commercials use to frighten us into buying us their products over the years. The unfortunate octogenarian lying helpless on the ground futilely proclaiming to her scores of cats, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” The slow motion tango of twisted metal and broken glass of seemingly every car insurance ad. And how can any of us forget the ski-masked bandit lurking outside of our windows just waiting to put that crowbar of his to use?

Indeed, whether we’re behind the wheel of a car or simply riding the couch, it does appear that we are in peril at any moment. While we all either ignore or get a chuckle out of these over-dramatized scenarios, the sad truth is that emergencies DO, in fact, happen. And the inconvenient truth of it all is that when and if they happen, they will invariably catch us off guard. That’s where the new BlackBerry app called I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency) comes to the rescue.

This free application from the Jared Company provides one-touch access to vital personal stats, medical information such as your name, names and telephone numbers of emergency contacts, blood type, prescriptions, allergies, even contact info for both your physician and health insurance provider.

We all have been in scenarios that have turned from bad to worse in almost the blink of an eye. Whether it was a frantic call to the paramedics or the all-too- common post-accident amnesia, these are the times where seconds could mean the difference between life and death. Think of the peace of mind, not only for yourself, but maybe even a loved one, of never having to answer “I don’t know” again in a time of crisis. The answer to any and all of those vital questions will be no further than a touchscreen away. JaredCo designed I.C.E. to be as user friendly as possible. The icon for it the universal red cross symbol with a simple to access, quick loading, one touch format.

Now for the drawbacks of the app, for lack of a better word. We have to remember that we live in a world where a very distinct portion of society does not have any interest in owning a cell phone. Then there’s that percentage of cell phone users that do not have smartphones. So, factoring in the technology learning curve of the non-smartphoners and Luddites could potentially run into a snag when you need someone else to access the I.C.E. app on your new-fangled doohickey.

Perhaps in the app’s next incarnation, a bypass could be implemented that would allow access even while the phone was locked. However, for now, JaredCo has the option of a downloadable wallet card that will assist paramedics or anyone else attempting to access you phone. So move this app to the top of your queue and the home screen of you phone. Oh look, a car insurance commercial is about to start.
