Palm isn't going to be left in the dust either. They have a new device coming down the pipe, the Treo 755. It loses the external antenna and beefs up. It is still missing the Wi-Fi that all the other phones support, however. It is the only one out of the group to have a simple square screen and not a wider screen. The new 755 sports the Palm OS, but look for a new Windows Mobile 6 device down the road. There is nothing official circulating now, but I have a hunch that you will see a device this year.
This year will certainly be an interesting one for PDA cell phones. The Apple iPhone is sure to make a splash in the market and other manufacturers aren't letting this go unnoticed. They won't let Apple steal the cell phone market like the company did with their iPod in the MP3 market. Many manufacturers are upgrading their current devices or even coming out with completely new devices to help keep their market share.
The iPhone hasn't hit the market yet as of writing, so its ultimate fate isn't set yet. It could flop like the Apple Newton and the other iTunes phones. It's kind of ironic if you think about it. Apple's attempt at a PDA failed and their attempt to get into the cell phone market failed, so what does Steve Jobs do? He makes a device to fit both and hopes it works. Will he pull off another iPod or another Newton? Time alone will tell.
