Alternatives to the iPod Touch - Archos continued
(Page 4 of 4 )
The Archos 605 WiFi is completely functional as an MP3 player, video player, photo viewer, and PDF viewer. It even has the capability to use a WiFi connection to connect to content providers, such as YouTube and CinemaNow, to download video content. On the audio side, the 605 WiFi supports playback of MP3, wma, and wav files. Audio is amplified thanks to a five band equalizer and bass boost.
Audio quality on the Archos 605 WiFi, while not the greatest, definitely equals most of its competitors. During audio playback, the player displays album artwork and also lets users insert bookmarks, a nice touch for those who enjoy lectures or audio books. In terms of video, the player supports MPEG-4, AVI, and WMV formats. Video is where the 605 really shines, because its resolution is unbeatable and unrivaled.

While the Archos 605 WiFi definitely impressive in most areas, it lacked in one: battery life. This is most likely due to the player's extremely high resolution during video playback, which can suck the life out of most any machine. The 605's battery life is listed at 16 hours for music and 5 hours for video. The lower battery life, however, is a small price to pay for such outstanding video quality.
The Archos 605 WiFi is definitely a hard product to beat, especially starting at just $229, which is $70 lower than the iPod Touch. With its superb screen quality on a 4.3 inch display and the fact that it comes complete with bonuses like a built-in kickstand and an internal speaker, one must think that it will give the iPod touch a run for its money with those consumers who look for more than just a brand name.
