Alienware HUB Docking Sound System - Hooking it up
(Page 5 of 6 )
One of the things I want to point out before hooking this up and testing it is the battery location. If you flip the unit over, you will see a round knob near the front.

By turning this knob to open, and then pushing two small switches, the battery door comes off allowing insertion of the 8 "D" batteries.

As you can see, the batteries are spread out, and curve around the bottom-firing subwoofer. This particular distribution helps keep the HUB balanced if you are carrying it via the handle, also visible in the above picture.

In my case, I plugged in the power to an AC outlet.

To my surprise, as soon as I plugged in the power I was greeted by red glowing eyes on the front of the unit. It seems that the power button was pressed sometime when I was fiddling around with it.

I took my iPod (which by some coincidence has an alien on its front) and hooked it up to the line-in jack. I then had to push the input selector, and was immediately greeted by the sound of some old school Planet Rock playing from the speakers.
Before I go into the audio quality, let me first show a few more shots of the HUB, for the sake of being thorough.

Above is a shot of the front of the unit. Notice the molding of the speaker grills on the left and right? The power and input selector buttons can be seen on the left above the speaker grill, while the volume buttons can be seen on the right. The absence of red eyes tells us that the HUB is currently off.

From a slightly different angle, you can see the speaker ports more closely, as well as have a better look at Alienware’s distinctive design. On the bottom right of the picture you can barely see the location of the bass, focus, and SRS controls, as well as the headphone jack. I still believe this to be illogical placement of these things.

From the back, you can see the built-in handle with the name Alienware on it. Below it, you can see the blow port for the subwoofer. If you look closely, the center of the blow port is also stamped with the Alienware logo.

Here’s a close image of where the flaring starts on the side of the hub. Once again, we see the Alienware logo incorporated into the design.
