OCZ PC3200 Platinum EL DC - OCZ PC3200 Platinum EL DC

OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Dual Channel Platinum Edition

    Benchmarks Continued

    PCMark 2002

Again, seeing very little improvement from 2.5/7/3/3 to 2/6/3/2 but the gains are there, however small they might be. Once again, going from 200 to 233MHz shows a substantial increase in memory score giving us nearly a 1000 point increase over a stock speed of 200MHz. Impressive.

    MemTach v0.93 Alpha

    200MHz 2.5/7/3/3         200MHz 2/6/3/2

    233MHz 2.5/7/4/4           233MHz 2/6/3/3

MemTach is another synthetic benchmarking program that William Henning, Editor of CPUReview.com. This one has been around for awhile but is a nice alternative to see memory performance in detail. With each successive increase in either speed or latency, we see a good boost in performance. Hitting the 233Mhz with timing settings of 2/6/3/3 show quite an increase as expected.

    Overclocking
Of course we wouldn't send you off w/out at least a quick discussion about the overclocking of these sweet platinum sticks. As you have seen throughout the review we compared benchmarks not only at a stock speed of 200MHz but also 233MHz which is quite a nice increase in memory speed, equaling that of current PC3700. Although we couldn't get the 3200 Platinum to run at any type of aggressive timing settings, it still did run at a respectable speed when the timings were relaxed a bit. And as most of the benchmarks here show, we see more of a performance increase by the numbers from raw MHz than we do with aggressive timings. The OCZ would run relatively stable at speeds in excess of 233MHz relaxed but we needed to increase the voltage to 2.8v and still some programs were picky about running, such as 3DMark and PCmark.

    Stock

    Overclocked to 240MHz

Still, running at 233MHz I was fairly impressed with the OCZ PC 3200 Platinum EL DDR. Not only did the memory run exactly as it was rated, but it ran well above their rated specs and let us pull off some decent numbers while benchmarking.

    Conclusion
OCZ has certainly come a long way as of late and the EL 3200 Dual Channel Platinum certainly lived up to our expectations and more. With the recent introduction of the Intel Springdale and Canterwood chipsets, memory manufacturers have had to go back to the drawingboard to not only design memory capable of super high speeds, but also memory capable of running both synchronous and asynchronous and fairly aggressive memory timings for the performance seekers out there. Does the OCZ 3200 Platinum deliver the goods? You bet it does, and it's currently running in my personal box right now.

OCZ does carry several variations of higher quality memory out there, such as the EL 3500 Platinum for a higher bus speed with low timings, and then the EL Gold series for folks looking for flat our raw MHz at any timings. However the 3200 Platinum is a great choice for just about anyone looking to get into a high-end Intel setup and not break the bank. A set of these will cost you roughly 140$ or less, and that's not too bad for PC3200 that will run PC3700 rated speed.

    Highs

    1. Super Sexy looks with the best looking heatspreaders on the market

    2. Runs great at rated speed with aggressive settings

    3. Overclocks very well, up to PC3700 speed with adjusted timings

    4. OCZ Guaranteed lifetime warranty

    5. Competitively priced

    Lows

    1. Limited availability

That about wraps it up. There are really not any lows in getting this memory since it ran great and priced just right. The only bad thing is the stuff is somewhat hard to find. ExcaliberPC has it in stock as well as Newegg but we are patiently waiting to see this stuff hitting the retail markets in quantity.
