Kingston PC3200UL Memory Review - Specifications and Test Gear

Here are the specifications, as shown on Kingston's website:

    • 184 pin unbuffered DDR modules
    • Timing Reference: 2-2-2-5-1 at +2.7V
    • Tested as a matched pair in multiple Intel and AMD PC3200 based test setups
    • High performance aluminum heat spreader
    • Lifetime warranty

    Kingston KHX3200ULK2 PC3200 Memory Review

We found it confusing as to why the memory modules state 2.6V but the data sheet shows 2.7V. Overall, these are some nice looking modules, for those who like to color-coordinate their case.

    Test System Setup

The KHX3200ULK2 memory was compared to the Corsair PC3200XL, a similar model, running on a motherboard with Intel's i875 chipset, due to its ability for high bus speeds and extraordinary memory performance.

    Motherboard- Abit IC7-Max3 BIOS 14
    Processor- Pentium IV 2.4 GHz
    - Pentium IV 2.4 GHz @ 3.2GHz
Video Card- ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
Hard Drive- Western Digital Raptor Serial ATA 74GB 10,000 RPM drive
Operating System- Windows XP Pro SP1
    Power Supply- Antec TrueControl 550
    RAM- 2x512MB Kingston PC3200UL
    - 2x512MB Corsair PC3200XL

In addition, we tested these memory modules in two other systems for compatibility. The ASUS A7X8X-Deluxe, based on the nForce2 chipset, had no problems at all with these modules and was able to run them at their rated timings and speed. The second system, an ASUS P4R800-V Deluxe based on ATI's 9100 IGP chipset did have some difficulties with the modules when they were run with the 2-2-2-5 timings. Once I loosened the timings to 2.5-3-3-6 they ran without any problems. (These results were not surprising.)  In fact, the P4R800-V has seemed to have problems with any RAM at tight timings. Corsair's low latency memory could not be used at CAS 2 either.

Benchmarks were run with the processor at the stock speed of 2.4 GHz with a 200MHz system bus and memory timings of 2-2-2-5. The benchmarks were then run again with the processor at 3.2 GHz and a system bus speed of 250MHz. A 5:4 ratio was used, effectively running the memory at its rated 200MHz but with a CPU capable of greater bandwidth. The timings remained at 2-2-2-5.
