Crucial packages the Ballistix Tracer PC4000 modules inside anti-static bags in individual packages (because that is how they are sold) with a Ballistix sticker and installation instructions. The anti-static bag and cardboard box give a sense that modules will not be damaged in shipment, especially compared to the blister packs used by some memory manufacturers. In addition, the sticker and instructions are a nice touch, although a case badge might be more useful for many users.

What sets the Ballistix Tracer modules apart from Crucial's standard Ballistix line is the appearance. The Tracer modules consist of a black PCB, black heat spreaders, eight blue ground effects LEDs that emit a constant glow at the base (near the pins) of each memory module, and eight "chasing" red and green LEDs atop the module that circulate, or trace, at varying speeds depending on memory usage.
The speed of the tracer LEDs is controlled by a custom designed circuit that relays bus activity to the LEDs. This means if you are just browsing the Internet or check your email the lights move very slowly, but if you're running CPU/memory intensive software like folding or gaming the lights move very quickly. It is also interesting to see how the lights respond when installed in single channel operation versus dual channel.

The Tracer's LEDs and the circuitry that controls them are powered directly from the module's power supply. This may sound alarming, but it is nothing to worry about. The Tracers do not require more voltage than their standard Ballistix counterpart. However, the LEDs will glow at different brightness levels depending on how much voltage is applied to the memory modules, i.e. 2.8V will glow brighter than 2.5V. Crucial does strongly warn users not to go crazy with this; it is not recommended to operate this memory over 2.8V because this could cause damage to the memory modules. Also, the LEDs will respond differently depending on the motherboard's chipset and BIOS version.
