We were very impressed by the Corsair PC3200 XL's performance. While the higher frequency TwinX PC4400 dominated the overclocked synthetic tests, the PC3200 XL equaled or bested the TwinX in the more thorough system benchmarks.
[Author’s note: I had been told that I needed to get lower latency memory for better system performance. It took review of these excellent modules from Corsair to see the real power of low latency RAM.]
In addition to the Corsair PC3200 XL’s spectacular performance at its rated speed, this memory turned out to be a very good overclocker. Reaching 216MHz (DDR 432) with the tight 2-2-2-5 timings was impressive enough, but reaching 249MHz (DDR498) is better performance than most PC4000 or higher speed rated RAM. The problem with the PC4400 and other PC4000 RAM is they can’t run tight timings at PC3200 speed. It was disappointing when we originally reviewed the TwinX PC4400 and was the reason that the TwinX was outperformed by the PC3200 XL. The PC3200 XL's ability to run both tight timings at low speeds and medium latencies at high speeds makes this memory very desirable.
