    SteelSeries SteelPad 5L Review

About a month ago I reviewed a mousing surface from Icemat. Before that point, I hadn’t really considered how much of a difference a precision mousing surface could make. Boy was I wrong. Here today to further illustrate that point is the SteelSeries SteelPad 5L, a professional gaming mouse pad.

Since the advent of optical mice, I had stopped using mouse pads altogether.  Yes, I still use a wrist-rest for better wrist posture, but for the mouse itself, it usually just rests on my desktop.

That changed a couple of months ago, when I reviewed a mousing surface from Icemat which literally just blew me away. I was honestly surprised at the difference it made in how I moved the mouse, whether I was gaming or just using my computer for various tasks.

Since then, I have found myself lingering a little more on the aisles in the local computer stores, checking out different mouse pad solutions for another one of my computers, which is dedicated to gaming. To be honest, I believe the search has ended with the SteelPad 5L from SteelSeries.

SteelSeries is not a new name to hardcore gamers.  They pride themselves on high performance gear for gamers.  A quick trip to their website finds what you might call their mission statement:

"SteelSeries is all about gaming. Our mission is to create performance enhancing gaming gear, created for and by leading professional gamers. We continuously strive to better ourselves, and work with leading professional gamers from 3 different continents to create our products."

Today we are going to look at the latest incarnation of the SteelPad, the 5L.  SteelSeries puts a lot of work and pride into the design of their products. Here's another quote from their website indicating the level of commitment to quality with which these folks imbue their products.

"Our mouse pads all feature extremely accurate and responsive surfaces, which allows the mouse to pick up minimal and precise movements. It's simply a lot easier to aim with a SteelPad.

To ensure performance enhancement in reaction time and accuracy, our mouse pads are thoroughly tested - and often developed in cooperation with the best gamers in the world."
