Microsoft Sidewinder Gaming Mouse - Final Thoughts

    Final Thoughts

For gamers, the new Microsoft Sidewinder gaming mouse should get them pretty excited. It does seem to have some advantages over other gaming mice currently on the market. One of the main advantages is the ability to record up to 5,000 macro sequences into the programmable buttons on the mouse for easy, one-touch action sequences. Another big difference between the Sidewinder and the competition is the LCD display, which is a nice touch.

Other Microsoft gaming mouse options include the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 and the Microsoft Habu. The IntelliMouse offers the user a gaming mouse with a maximum speed of at least 54 inches per second and an optical engine that produces 9,000 frames per second.

This is much quicker than the Sidewinder, but this mouse does not have the features that the Sidewinder has. The Habu boasts the about the same performance numbers as the Sidewinder, but again, this mouse does not have nearly the number of features of the Sidewinder.

The Intellimouse model will cost around $30, while the Habu will run about $69.  The IntelliMouse would make a good alternative to its more expensive competitors if price is an issue.

The director of games for Windows at Microsoft, Kevin Unangst, had this to say about the new Sidewinder: "Great games on Windows deserve great controllers, and the new Sidewinder Mouse delivers, the SideWinder Mouse is an ideal companion for every game, from your favorite PC classics to the upcoming releases 'Crysis,' 'Hellgate: London,' 'World in Conflict,' and more."

It sounds like Microsoft is excited about the release of the Sidewinder, and they should be. This mouse should be able to separate itself from the competition thanks to Microsoft's great innovation on their first in-house production gaming mouse.
