Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse - A closer look

This mouse has a number of non-standard buttons on it that I’d like to look at a little more closely.

First are the two small buttons beneath the scroll-mouse.  These let the user switch between the DPI of the mouse while using it.  Without using the drivers, these are configured for 400, 800, and 2000 DPI by default.  If you install the drivers, you are able to set up custom values, and in addition, can even set up custom values for specific programs.  When playing Unreal Tournament, you may want a different DPI when you are using the sniper rifle zoomed all the way in, versus running around with a shock rifle.  Also, the three lights on the left indicate, at a glance, what DPI setting is currently active.

The mouse wheel works as almost any other mouse wheel, except it also has the ability to scroll left and right.  Yes, this wheel will tilt on its axis to allow left and right scrolling.  This only works, however, if you install the driver software.

The last button to look at is located next to your thumb.  By default, it works as a BACK button in your web browser.  I found that this can sometimes be a pain.  If you reach over and grab the mouse while on a web page, you sometimes inadvertently roll back a page or two.  This will probably happen less when I get used to the mouse, but I thought it worth mentioning.

In addition, all of the buttons are customizable within the SetPoint software.  You can change the behavior of all the buttons, including the left and right mouse buttons themselves.  You can customize up to five DPI settings here as well.
