Logitech G15 LCD Keyboard Review - Conclusion

This keyboard doesn’t exactly come cheap. It’s $80 at the time of this writing, though that is less expensive than some other backlit or specialty keyboards.

The thought behind the feature set separates the G15 from pretty much every other keyboard I've seen. Other gaming keyboards don’t offer this flexibility and customization. The Z-board can adapt to many games, but you need to buy special key layouts for every different kind of game you play. It also doesn’t let you design your own macros and lacks various other good parts of this keyboard.

Regrettably, Logitech relies almost entirely on users and game developers making the LCD display useful, but luckily it looks like it's catching on.

Take a quick look over a few of the more noteworthy pros and cons.

    Pros

    • Programmable G keys are awesome for both games and productivity, making repetitive tasks/games simpler. These alone are enough reason to get this keyboard. Trust me.
    • Built-in USB hub with cable management is convenient and reduces cables going behind your desk.
    • Blue backlight looks great and lets me type and game in the dark
    • Macros!
    • LCD display is highly customizable and programmable. A couple forums online are starting to develop great toys for the keyboard display.
    • Logitech software and drivers installed and worked perfectly, even with all the special features on the keyboard.

    Cons

    • Logitech provides only 3 applications for the LCD and relies on users and game devs to build the rest
    • Few games currently support the screen, but more will soon. Also the Miranda/FRAPs/Clock programs are still useful while gaming.
    • Instruction manual is not included. Figure it out yourself, or see if you can find answers in the help files.

Overall, this keyboard is well worth the $80 to anyone who games much or wants to be more productive. It is definitely made for power users, and would just confuse family members who only use the computer for email and eBay. For anyone tech savvy enough to read Dev Hardware, this keyboard is a MUST-buy. Because of its usefulness and all the other things that third party programmers and game developers will do with the LCD screen in the coming months, the Logitech G15 gets the Dev Hardware recommended award.
