Logitech Cordless Desktop MX for Bluetooth - Installing the Software

Even thought the mouse and keyboard work as-is out of the box, you really need to install the included CD that contains proper drivers and software to get the most out of your keyboard, mouse, and Bluetooth hub.

I'm not going to bore you with 30 screenshots of the software installation. Suffice it to say that Logitech's instructions are very concise and easy to follow. That being said, however, I did have an issue during installation with Norton Antivirus. Norton kept catching some Logitech processes as they attempted to start, flagging them as possible viruses. I quickly took the filenames and did some googling, and found out that the programs that Norton was catching were valid creative programs. With a little work, I got the installation to finish with all software installed.

During the installation, several things occurred. First of all, the software for the Bluetooth hub was installed. The hub doubles as a mouse charger, and is the interface the mouse and keyboard use to communicate with the computer. Note that when installed as default, the Logitech Bluetooth hub will only allow Logitech Bluetooth devices to connect to it. This can be changed with some additional tinkering. Instructions for this are available on Logitech's website.

The next thing worth mentioning is that the keyboard and mouse have now been "secured." Logitech encrypts the wireless communications to ensure there is no interference from other kinds of cordless devices, such as wireless telephones. This can be very helpful for people like me, who have wireless networking and telephones in use at all times.

Finally, SetPoint software by Logitech is now also installed. SetPoint is a suite of utilities that allows you to get the most out of your cordless desktop. You can assign programs to the custom keyboard buttons (more than 10!), connect or reconnect a Bluetooth device, or even check the battery levels of your devices.

Here is an example screenshot of SetPoint:
