Battle of the Mice - Laser Mice

A laser mouse's design is quite similar to that of an optical mouse. The dramatic improvement is because the LED is replaced by an infrared laser (IR Laser). This innovation brought tremendous advantages: circa 20x improved sensitivity toward the irregularities of the surface. This is possible due to the significantly higher resolution that is available thanks to the laser IR.

Manufacturers also incorporated energy saving features that turn off the laser infrared sensor on a frequent basis; it basically blinks on standby. As a result, they have also improved the lifespan of the laser IR.

This is the latest technology; it entered the marketplace around 2004. Dozens of new mice appeared especially for hardcore gamers and design artists. As a marketing gimmick a few manufacturers opted for labeling optical mice as "laser mice" due to the red color of their main LED. It created chaos and many people were fooled.

However, as a technological invention, laser mice have really affected the endeavors of artists and gaming enthusiasts. They delivered unimaginable improvement. It was, and still is, every hardcore gamer's dream to own one.

A picture of laser mouse internals is not required because basically it looks like an optical mouse.

So let's move on… the skirmish of mice is here!
