Major Mobiles Promise to Keep Costs Down on LTE Technology - Keeping Down Costs: A Trickle-Down Effect?
Basically, these seven companies have agreed to make it easy for computer and mobile manufacturers to use LTE technology in the products they in turn market to consumers. Such an agreement no doubt facilitates the spread of new technology, making it more widely available to all markets and to all buyers. If it’s easy for manufacturers to implement the new technology, they will do so. But what does that mean to the ones who are buying the cell phones and the computers? Does it mean anything at all?
LTE technology will be made more affordable to manufacturers, but that doesn’t immediately translate into savings for the consumer. Any new technology is subject to inflated prices, as people are generally willing to pay more for what’s new, fresh, and happening. Is it possible that the savings of manufacturers will correlate into savings for the buyers?
It isn’t very likely. New computers and cell phones, when they’re new, always have a price to reflect their time on the shelves. New computers and cell phones boasting new technology can demand even higher prices. Customers likely won’t see a price difference when the time comes to start enjoying LTE technology for themselves, at least not in the products they purchase.
LTE Technology: What’s the Good News?
Seven major mobile companies pledged to keep down costs on LTE, but it’s doubtful this pledge will be reflected in the price of new wireless products. So…what’s the point of such an announcement? Does any of this news mean anything to the average wireless user?
The good news is, it does. By keeping licensing fees low and making it easy for manufacturers to use LTE technology, the consumers are the ones who ultimately benefit. Low licensing fees will help facilitate the spread of LTE, giving new and lower-revenue manufacturers the opportunity to present products capable of using LTE.
This means LTE technology could potentially be available in a wide range of wireless products, and not just products of the high-end electronic variety. All companies will have the opportunity to use LTE, which creates a competitive (and much wider) pricing market. Wide availability will help keep the price of such technology at a much more affordable level, so in a very real way this pact helps all average wireless users enjoy the newest technology.
