    First private astronaut reaches space

    Michael Melvill just became the first man to go into space without any government hardware. Looks like private space travel is on the map. Now, for the fabled birth of Zephram Cochran, the arrival of Vulcans, and enless "Klingons around Uranus" jokes.

    "The motor fired for about 70 seconds, propelling the craft straight up, where it continued coasting upward to reach the fringes of space. There, the blackness of space and the curvature of the Earth is visible, and Melvill experienced more than three minutes of weightlessness."
