AMD: no longer the also-ran

Although the processor makers Intel and AMD have long been playing a "me too! me too!" game with each other, AMD chips were often described as being nothing but cheaper versions of the Pentium. That's not the case any more.

"This month, arch rival AMD said it will launch dual-core versions of its AMD 64 processor, targeted at both desktops and servers, in the second half of next year. Multi-core versions of AMD 64 are also on the agenda, said AMD. So, it looks like AMD is echoing Intel's line. But back in February, it was Intel that seemed to be trailing when it announced plans to add 64-bit extensions to its x86 line, a strategy that AMD has followed for years, and which it finally delivered on in 2003.
