Upgrading Your Mass Market System, Part 2 - Reconnecting IDE cables

Now that the memory is installed and locked in, we'll reconnect all the flat gray IDE cables to the drives and to the motherboard, as they were when we disconnected them in the beginning.

    IDE

Once you get the IDE cables connected you can also reattach the cables that come from the front of your case and go to the bottom front of your motherboard. These wires control the power button and the lights on the front of your case. If you're having a problem with them look in the motherboard's manual to find out what wire goes where. Also keep in mind that if, when you have everything re-assembled and plugged in, you hit your power button and you get no response whatsoever, it's probable that these wires are connected incorrectly.

Note: Remember that whenever you hook up a device to the board, you have to make sure that what's called "the 1 pin" is connected to the proper end of the gray cable. The 1-pin should be on the same side as the red stripe on the IDE cable, and when connected to the device (the hard drive or CD-R, for example), the red stripe should be on the same side as the power connectors. The 1 pin is sometimes marked on the motherboard, but if it's not, check the motherboard's manual. If that fails, then it'll simply be a matter of trial and error. Of course, if you bought the same gear I did, just take a look at the picture below.

After you get all those connected you should have something like this:

    HSF installed

Actually in the picture above the top CD drive still isn't connected but with that wire on it gets a bit difficult to see what's going on. At this point we can reintroduce the power supply to the case. Just remember to connect your bracelet to the case frame once again after you have it reinstalled. Then you can connect all the power supply wires to the motherboard and drives.
