    Sempron Overclocking - Conclusion

So what do I have to say? Given adequate temperatures from my copper waterblock and transmission oil cooler shrouded with parts of a cardboard Eggo box, and the rather chilly Canadian fall weather, the CPU managed to bounce up to the speed of the current top AMD chip.  Even adding in the cost of my entire water cooling setup, it's still cheaper than buying that FX-55 in the first place. I have to assume that this CPU is one of the main reasons why DFI brought out a stellar overclockers board for socket 754 before socket 939.

    Highs

    • Cheap, and only going to get more so with the transition to 90nm
    • Top end performance from a low class chip (in many applications)
    • Nice upgrade for those early socket 754 adopters

    Lows

    • Getting two double sided DIMMS to work at high speed (both memory and CPU) is difficult, bordering on impossible
    • Lack of L2 cache does hurt in some applications
    • Need stellar clocking memory to really take advantage of available bandwidth 1:1
