Encrypting Hard Drives with TrueCrypt - Formatting the Volume

You also have the option to perform a “Quick Format” on the standard volume. When this option is unchecked, the entire volume will be formatted and filled with random data. While performing a quick format is much faster, it is the least secure option because it will be possible to identify how data is stored on the volume based on the abrupt disappearance or random data from certain locations of the hard drive. If you are encrypting a new, unformatted hard drive, the quick format option is suggested because the hard drive contained no data from the start. If your hard drive already contains data, it is advised you leave this option unchecked.

This step also generates a random number from your mouse movements based on the hash algorithm you selected earlier. It is important to move your mouse around the window for a few seconds so a truly random number can be generated. You will see the “Random Pool” change whenever you move your mouse.

Once you have selected your desired file system, click the “Format” button. The time required to format the hard drive depends on the size and speed of the hard drive, or if you selected the “Quick Format” option.

After clicking the “Format” button, TrueCrypt will warn you that all data on the hard drive will be destroyed. Click the “Yes” button to continue.

The formatting process will now begin. This can take a while depending on your hard drive size, speed, and whether or not you selected “Quick Format.” In this example, my hard drive will take roughly one hour to format.

Once the formatting process is complete, TrueCrypt will inform you that the volume was successfully created. Simply click the “Exit” button so you can close the TrueCrypt Volume Creation Wizard and begin the necessary steps to mount your encrypted hard drive.

Please check back tomorrow to learn how to create a hidden volume on an encrypted hard drive.
