Sharp LC-32D47UT and the Panasonic TC-P54S1 - Advanced Settings and Design

Advanced settings exist, but are limited. There is a black level adjustment as well as a setting that automatically adjusts the display's brightness according to the amount of light in the room. Color temperature adjustments are restricted to just three presets. A noise reduction setting is on board too.

The TC-P54S1 also has a few settings to help avoid on-screen burn-in or image retention. There are five aspect ratio options that can be used with HD sources. Unluckily for sports fans and multi-taskers, the TC-P54S1 does not have a picture-in-picture function.

The design of the Panasonic TC-P54S1 mirrors that of many other large plasmas with its glossy black bezel. Its bottom panel has a slight curve and is highlighted by a thin gray strip that runs along its length.

The set rests on a wide, rectangular base that is also glossy black. The base does a good job of keeping the television steady, although it does not swivel. Physical controls for the television reside on the lower right side of its panel.

Connectivity on the TC-P54S1 is decent. The back panel holds two HDMI ports, an RF input, an AV input with composite and S-Video, two component video inputs, and an optical digital audio output. The side panel holds an extra HDMI port, an AV input, and an SD card slot for data transfers with other devices like digital cameras. If you want to connect your PC to the TC-P54S1, you are out of luck, as it has no VGA port.

The Panasonic TC-P54S1 definitely has its flaws, particularly with its sparse adjustment options and inaccurate color. However, it does offer great black levels and good color saturation. Best of all, it is competitively priced, making it a worthy contender for those looking for a large plasma television.
