Today we will review a pair of affordable flat panel LCD TVs. If you're ready to get one and want to make sure you get the best bang for your buck, keep reading. We'll be looking at the LG 32LH20 and the Westinghouse SK-32H640G.
The 32LH20 from LG is an entry-level 32-inch LCD television with excellent picture controls and some added bonuses. While its picture may not be the best in its class in some aspects, it is a solid overall choice for first time LCD buyers. The LG 32LH20 is available for around $450, depending on where you shop.
The LG 32LH20 is a 720p HDTV with a resolution of 1,366x768. Although its 720p status may not be as sexy as that of a 1080p set, at the 32-inch size you really cannot tell too much of a difference between the two classifications. As far as the picture produced, you do get solid color accuracy with the 32LH20. The only real negative to its picture performance comes in the way of its black levels, which are not the darkest among its competition, so if you like watching movies with the lights off and are picky about the deepness of black levels you may find yourself a bit disappointed. Sound-wise, the 32LH20 produces a great audio experience thanks to its hidden speaker system, which emits sound in all directions, meaning those sitting right in front of the television will not be the only ones able to hear it.
If you are a big fan of making picture adjustments, the 32LH20 will definitely satisfy your needs, as it has one of the most extensive sets of picture adjustments in its class. The highlight of the picture adjustments is the Picture Wizard feature, which allows complete novices to adjust picture settings with ease. Picture Wizard offers on-screen reference points to allow just about anyone to calibrate settings to their optimal levels. You can adjust such things as color, tint, sharpness, black and white levels, and backlighting using the Wizard feature. All you have to do is follow the simple instructions and make your adjustments so that they match the ideal examples given to you on-screen. This is a great tool to have for those who are inexperienced with adjusting television picture controls but want the ability to do so without ruining the picture. When your calibrations are complete, you can save them and apply them to various inputs of your choice.
There are also plenty of adjustments available beyond the basics for those more versed in the art of picture adjustment. The 32LH20 is ISFccc Ready, meaning it allows for calibration of settings on a more professional scale. Among the more advanced controls accessible on the 32LH20 are those for dynamic contrast, color temperature, gamma control, black level, edge enhancement, and noise reduction, among others. There is also a full color management system on board as well as in-depth white balance settings. You can also tweak color by adjusting red, green, and blue levels individually.
Other settings available on the LG 32LH20 include those for aspect ratio. There are four different aspect ratio modes available for use with standard sources, and five modes for high definition sources. Some settings also exist for the environmentally and fiscally conscious, too. Besides being Energy Star compliant, the 32LH20 offers energy-saving modes that reduce the backlight to help you not only save on your electric bill, but also help save the environment.
