Gateway XHD3000 30 LCD Monitor with Quad-HD Technology - Performance

    Performance

The performance and image quality accomplished by the XHD3000 is directly related to the type of input used. For example, if you were to use the dual-link DVI-D cable set-up, you would be able to take advantage of the highest resolution possible (2560 x 1600). If you chose to use a VGA, HDMI, or single-link DVI-D connection, you can expect a maximum resolution output of 1900 x 1200--still higher than most of the competition. Whichever way you go, you will still get HD-quality resolution.

There is very little color smearing during fast action movies or games, and no visible ghosting. There is only a small issue with gray scale levels, but not a big problem. Up-scaling lower resolution devices works great on this monitor, and does not produce any smearing or pixelation. I reviewed independent test results at www.pcmag.com and www.pcworld.com, and they both agreed that this monitor is very good at color reproduction, clarity, and response time. These independent tests showed very little in terms of negative picture quality issues. My research has led me to the conclusion that this monitor will work excellently for both watching DVDs and playing video games, as well as normal computing uses.

    Negative Aspects?

Up until this point, I have had nothing but good things to say about the XHD3000 and for good reason. This monitor is an all-around great choice for someone looking for a wide screen flat panel. I have found a few minor issues with this monitor, though, that are worth mentioning.

The first issue I have with this unit is that it does not have a built-in HDTV tuner. Now this isn't a deal breaker for me, but it would have been nice to see it included in the $1700 price tag. My second issue with the XHD3000 is its price tag. Compared with the competition, the price isn't that bad, but it is still quite a commitment to fork over $1700 for a monitor when there are plenty of healthy alternatives for around $1000.

My last minor gripe is one that I heard from a few different users while conducting some research on the XHD3000. They complained of the monitor releasing lots of heat during operation, much of which is distinct and can really heat up a small room. A monitor of this size will release a lot of heat. But if you look at the bright side, it will feel great in the winter for those of you living in the north like myself!

    Final Thought

Despite my minor gripes with this monitor, I find myself falling in love with its versatility, quality, and overall style. This monitor is, in my opinion, one of the best overall models on the market. Yes, there are better monitors specifically for gaming or movies, but it is tough to find a better all-around performer. The up-scaling technology through the use of the HQV chip in this unit is awesome, and in my book it catapults this monitor ahead of the class. For those of you who can afford the $1700 price tag, this monitor is worth every penny.
