BenQ V2400 Eco and Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW

What do you value more in an LCD monitor, excellent performance or environmental awareness? The two monitors we'll review today ask you to make that decision. The BenQ V2400 Eco may encourage you to trade your hard-earned green for a greener world, while the Samsung SynchMaster 2233SW offers good value in other ways. Keep reading for a closer look.

The BenQ V2400 Eco is a 24-inch monitor that, as you can tell by its name, stresses environmental consciousness. Although this is a worthy cause, the monitorís solid, yet unspectacular overall performance makes it hard to justify its high price tag of $350. The V2400 Eco comes with a lengthy three-year warranty on parts and labor as well as phone support available on the weekdays.

The BenQ V2400 Eco is a 1080p LED-backlit display with 1,920x1,080 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. While its 1080p distinction is nice, it does fall a bit short when it comes to performance. Although itís not a poor performer by any means, at its price of around $350, you would expect more.

The performance is particularly lacking when it comes to the overall brightness. Even at the maximum brightness level, the picture seems to be a bit on the dull side. This dullness really comes through when watching movies or playing video games, as the graphics do not seem to jump off the screen as one would wish.

Another performance issue with the V2400 Eco is that its viewing angles are not the greatest. If you view the display from a wide angle, some distortion occurs. For the casual viewer, these issues may seem to be of the nitpicking variety, but, again, considering the cost of the V2400 Eco, you really hope to get the best picture out there, which really is not the case with this monitor.

Although its picture may not be the greatest, the V2400 Eco does offer solid adjustable picture settings through its on-screen display, or OSD. The OSD is user-friendly for the most part and allows for quick adjustments on the fly. The display comes with six preset picture modes: Standard, Movie, Game, Photo, sRGB, and Eco. Each mode is calibrated to give you the optimal viewing experience for different tasks you may perform.
