Playback mode is where the touch screen interface really shines, though. You can program and save specific gestures to use for functions such as deleting or adding photos to favorites, among other things. You can also use your finger to cycle through photos or zoom in on objects. Even better, using Active Display technology, you can tilt or shake the camera with a flick of your wrist to advance to the next photo.
All of these options make for a more immersive and fun experience, as well as a nice way to show off your new toy to your friends. Of course, if you prefer to be more discreet, you can always just use the physical controls to be more old fashioned.
The shooting modes on the PowerShot SD980 IS are limited to three: Smart Auto, Program/Scene, and Movie. Beginners will like the Smart Auto mode, which handles all the technical settings for you based on 22 predefined shooting situations and allows you to focus more on the object you are shooting.
More advanced users will appreciate the Program/Scene mode, which allows you to choose from a variety of preset scene options or to adjust settings such as white balance. Finally, with movie mode, users can record video clips in 720p HD up to 10 minutes in length.
Casual photographers looking for a dependable point-and-shoot with touch-screen capabilities should give the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS a serious look. Its touch-screen alone makes taking pictures a lot of fun, and with the Canon name you also can feel secure knowing you are getting a quality product.
