The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 and the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS

With modern digital cameras offering 10 megapixels and more advanced technologies, you don't need to be a dedicated shutterbug -- or spend thousands of dollars -- to take gorgeous pictures. Today we'll be reviewing two compact point-and-shoot digital cameras in the $300 to $400 range, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 and the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS. One of them might be worth taking with you on your next vacation.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 is a point-and-shoot 10.2-megapixel camera that packs a lot of punch in an attractive and portable design. Thanks to some high-end technological features usually found in larger, more expensive cameras, the Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 delivers swift performance and can provide good quality photos in some less than desirable shooting conditions. It also has some modes that can add to the overall fun of taking pictures. The Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 is currently available for a retail price of $350.

The Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 has a very compact design; it weighs 4.2 ounces and measures 3.6 inches wide by 2 inches tall by 0.8 inch thick. It can fit into most pockets or handbags easily, and despite its small size, it feels quite solid and durable.

On the back of the camera is its 2.7-inch LCD color display. It is an adequate size for viewing photos you have just taken and won't strain your eyes when scrolling through the camera's menus. Also on the back are buttons to access the menu, review photos, different shooting modes, and more. One negative about the mode dial button is that it's a bit loose, so you may switch modes inadvertently if you graze it while gripping the camera.

Other than the raised Sony logo on the front of the camera, there is no real grip to speak of, so those with larger hands could find the very compact body a bit slippery at times. At the top of the camera reside buttons for power, shutter-release, and high-speed shooting. Sony chose black as the base model color scheme for the camera's exterior.
