Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 Review - Features
The W80 has a great feature set, which I think sets this camera apart from the competition. I have already described a couple of key features which are the HD capability of this camera, and the new Bionz processor which runs all of the internal operations of this camera. Beyond these two features, I think users will be pleasantly surprised.
One great feature is Sony's face detection technology. This technology is becoming big in the digital camera industry, and you can see similar technology used in Canon models. This feature allows the user to take great group photos by focusing in on up to eight faces at once. Sony also put a multi-point focus system into the W80, which is somewhat similar to the face detection technology. This feature allows the user to focus in on up to nine focal points in a shot, and not just on the main object in the picture. Both of these features are great, because they allow anyone to take great quality shots, in different situations, without having to mess around with any manual controls in order to get the picture.
Sony offers a great in-camera editing package with the W80. This feature allows the user to make certain adjustments to images while they are still on the camera. It will not replace Photoshop, but it is a great tool to use before you even upload photos to a printer or computer.
The W80 has a 7.2 megapixel sensor, which is capable of 3x optical zoom. These numbers are sufficient and very competitive with other cameras. In order to take good quality, long-range shots, you need a good image stabilization system in the camera. Sony has put one in the W80, which does a good job of reducing blurry images due to camera shake. Sony has also made the W80 capable of reaching ISO levels of 3200, which also helps to keep blurriness to a minimum because of faster shutter speeds.
The menu system of the W80 is also great, with a very user-friendly design. It won't take long for someone to learn because it is simple and flows very nicely through the various menus. It is very pleasing on the eyes the way that Sony designed the menu system, and it is unlike any other menu system in any digital camera currently out there.
Other standard features include red-eye reduction, special effects, shooting programs, 640 x 480 MPEG movies, a self-timer, and a built-in microphone. The W80 also comes with a standard one year warranty on parts and labor.
In the box of the W80 you can expect to find the following:
- 7.2 effective Megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-W80 camera
- NP-BG1 rechargeable lithium-ion battery
- Battery charger
- Wrist strap
- USB + A/V cable
- CD-ROM featuring Picture Motion Browser and drivers
- 32 page basic manual (printed) plus full manual (on CD-ROM)

The W80 comes equipped with 31 MB of internal memory, which will only hold about 10-15 photos. I would recommend purchasing a 2 or 4 GB memory card. These cards are relatively inexpensive.
