Olympus Stylus 1030 SW Compact Digital Camera - Performance
(Page 4 of 4 )
Much of the Olympus Stylus 1030's price comes from its rugged qualities, so if you're not in need of a camera that is waterproof, shockproof, cold-proof or crush-proof, you may want to consider purchasing another digital camera. That being said, the 1030 definitely fits the bill and performs well as a digital camera that you can literally take anywhere, in any weather and through any conditions.
Many would argue that one of the most, if not the most important aspect of a camera's timing is the shutter lag. Consumers will be happy to know that Olympus's 1030 performs very well in this category, even better than other digital cameras at a similar price. Without a partial press of the shutter you will experience lag times of 0.4 to 0.5 seconds. With the shutter partially pressed, merely to achieve focus and exposure lock, shutter lag on the 1030 was nearly non-existent at 0.1 seconds. Cycle time, which is the time between shots, was also very good on the 1030 SW. Consumers will find that they are able to shoot again and again with just a few seconds of lag time in between. The flash charge on compact cameras is notorious for being bad, but the Olympus 1030 has an excellent flash charge, with just 3 to 4 seconds between discharges.
In terms of picture quality, consumers should understand that much of the appeal and price of the Olympus Stylus 1030 comes from where it can go and what this particular digital camera is capable of doing in various climates and conditions. That being said, the 1030 doesn't have bad image quality, but at nearly $300 consumers may expect stellar photographs each time, which isn't really the case with the 1030 SW. Sharpness in the center of the lens is good, as is general image quality at baseline sensitivity. The only major concern serious photographers may have is with the color reproduction, which has a tendency to look a bit artificial. Overall, the Stylus 1030 SW does a fine job of capturing nuance and detail given the engineering constraints of its design.
If you're on the market for a rough and tumble digital camera that can sustain many ups and downs and work seamlessly on your various adventures, then the Olympus Stylus 1030 compact digital camera is for you. The only thing really lacking for the 1030 is crispness in photos and a lack of vibrancy in photos, but other than that it's got a lot going for it.
