Olympus Stylus 1030 SW Compact Digital Camera - Features

Aside from being seemingly indestructible, at first glance the Olympus Stylus 1030 looks like your typical run-of-the-mill point-and-shoot digital camera. It has a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 2.7 inch LCD lens with 230,000 pixel resolution and five steps of brightness adjustment, as well as a 3.6x optical zoom, but this compact digital camera also comes equipped with some cool not-so-run-of-the-mill features. The Stylus 1030 has a built-in "manometer," which can record air or water pressure and attach that data to your images as altitude or depth. Another feature that allows your most precious photographs to become even more memorable is the ability to add voice memos to still features.

Just when you think that the Olympus' features are in a niche specifically geared towards the adventurous the world over, you find that the camera also has a wide array of features that are ideal for those who just want to take good photographs. The 1030 has a built-in shadow adjuster, face detector and digital image stabilization technologies, ensuring that the photos you take, whether on safari or in your backyard, are the best possible. The Olympus 1030 also has an LED illuminator next to the flash for illuminating close-up shots or other photos in which you can't (or don't want) to use a flash, for example while attending a play or concert. The 1030's features offer a little something for all tastes. If you're interested taking landscape photographs or action shots, perhaps while on your next vacation, the camera's Panorama mode allows you to stitch together images while still in your camera, making wide panorama shots.

Olympus' 1030 comes equipped with 29 shooting modes, 24 of which are preprogrammed scene modes; these include four underwater modes. In terms of shooting modes, the Stylus 1030 is typical of other digital cameras and of other SW models by Olympus. The Auto mode enables the camera to handle absolutely everything, from exposure to flash, timer to exposure compensation and macro settings. Program auto is essentially still automatic, but in addition to the full auto settings, you yourself can change or adjust the white balance setting, metering setting, ISO and enable burst or sequential shooting.

The Stylus 1030 SW also offers 24 "scene modes," which includes the four previously mentioned underwater modes and a pre-capture movie mode. The digital image stabilization mode increases the ISO of the camera in order to minimize blur from other hand-shake or subject movement. Lastly, the movie mode allows you to choose from resolutions of 640x480 and 320x240 at both 30fps and 15fps, though optical zoom is not available during movie capture.

The Olympus Stylus 1030 offers a range of both conventional and unconventional digital camera features, though there are a couple more features worth mentioning. The new 1030 has a new guide feature included, which assists you and escorts you though the camera's various settings, eventually leading you to whatever effect you are out to achieve. The 1030 also comes equipped with a menu-based "wizard," which will prove to be very handy for beginning photographers or those not accustomed to working with or using a digital camera. Last, but not least, the Stylus 1030 SW also has a mode dial feature that enables you to access the playback mode and the favorites mode, which will immediately bring up images that you previously flagged as favorites.
