Nikon D40 SLR Camera - Features

The D40 comes equipped with pretty much all the features you would need to get started with your first digital SLR camera. The Nikkor lens, included in the kit, is extremely lightweight and performs very well. Images are captured with the D40's 6.1 megapixel CCD image sensor, which is somewhat of a low figure but performs well nevertheless. The D40 comes equipped with an auto ISO feature that will automatically adjust from 200-1600 ISO depending upon the lighting conditions. Speaking of lighting conditions, the D40 has a built-in flash which pops up quickly and quietly on the top of the camera. There is also an auto flash off mode which you can use in situations where flash photography is not allowed and the lighting conditions are dim.

The D40 also offers an array of in-camera editing options that may be used to edit shots. Some of these options include D-lighting, Red-eye reduction, and Monochrome, which gives you the option of black and white photos, for example. The D40 can also take close-ups with a touch of a button, which are crystal clear. The sports mode of the D40 increases the shutter speeds, so that the user can catch fast moving action without the blurriness that less-expensive cameras will show. There are also portrait and landscape options, which further the user-adjustable interface that allows for the perfect shot no matter what the situation or lighting conditions.

With the kit version of the D40 (MRSP $599), which is currently the only option available, you will receive the following features straight from the the box:

    • Lens AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II
    • Body cap
    • Front lens cap
    • Camera strap
    • Eyepiece cap
    • Rubber eyecup
    • USB cable
    • Quick charger (MH-23)
    • AC power cord
    • Li-ion battery (EN-EL9)
    • Accessory shoe cover
    • Lens cap
    • PictureProject CD ROM
    • Quick start guide
    • Instruction manual
    • Warranty and registration card

Keep in mind that the D40 does not come with an SD memory card, so it is recommended that you purchase a 2 or 4 GB card; both are relatively inexpensive. I would also recommend a camera case for protection. You may also want to purchase a more powerful flash, like the SB 400, which costs just over $100. Other lenses may also be purchased separately for more zooming power and wider-angled shots, as the D40 is compatible with all AF-S and AF-I lenses.
