Nikon D40 SLR Camera - Cosmetics
The Nikon D40 is a relatively small camera -- as a matter of fact, it is Nikon's smallest DSLR camera as of the date of this writing. The D40 weighs in at about 16 ounces, and its dimensions are 5.0x3.7x2.5 inches. The small stature of the D40 is comparable to the Canon Rebel XTi, which is one of the smallest DSLRs on the market today. The size of the D40 is a big improvement over the D50, whose body is noticeably larger and weighs about 65 grams more than the D40.
The feel of the D40 is really solid; it is designed to be very comfortable to hold with its hand grip. The smaller size of this camera may make it a little more uncomfortable to people with larger hands, but I think the small size is more of a plus than a minus. The small amount of discomfort that some may have with this camera should probably not be a factor in whether or not to buy this camera, because it is really not a big issue.
A big change from the look of the D50 to the D40 is the LCD data readout panel being removed from the top of the camera. Personally, I liked this panel on top of the camera, because it gives the user some useful information about the status of various functions of the camera. This panel is not a necessity, though, and some features had to be left off the D40 to save on costs anyway. In place of this panel, you can find the function dial, which is near the shutter button on the top left side of the camera.

At the rear of the camera, you can find the other function buttons such as the trash button, play button, and the menu button. The LCD screen is a respectable 2.5 inches; it is bright and boasts a very high resolution so that the user can see the screen clearly, even in brightly lit conditions. Above the LCD screen is the optical viewfinder which is sufficient, but lacks a grid option.

The overall look and feel of this camera is great. It is comfortable to hold, and is compact and lightweight. The camera is designed well, making it easy for a new user to pick up quickly on the various controls.
