Nikon Coolpix S200 Review - Features

The S200 will not blow you away with its set of features, but it isn't bad for a relatively inexpensive ultra-compact.  This camera features a 7.1 mega-pixel sensor, which will produce good 8 x 10 photos, and is capable of reaching ISO levels of 1000.  The ISO level can be set on automatic or manual.  The highest ISO settings will allow the user to take decent shots in low-light conditions by speeding up the shutter speeds.

The S200 also has a nice image stabilization system which Nikon calls their Vibration Reduction (VR).  This feature will help to reduce the amount of camera shake while taking photos, and it is good to have when fully zoomed in on an object.  It works okay in this camera, although Canon's image stabilization system works better.

Another nice feature of the S200 is the face-priority auto focus (AF), which will automatically seek out faces and focus in on them.  This feature is not available in many other cameras in the the $200 price range.  This camera also has a red-eye feature that works well; photos can also be fixed by the in-camera editing software.  These two features will help produce decent portraits.

This camera makes photography easy because of all of the automatic settings such as white balance, D-lighting, AF, and ISO settings.  Most people will find that the automatic settings work very efficiently and produce good results compared to other cameras.

Other notable features include 3x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom, 15 scene modes, video capture, and digital noise reduction.  The zoom power of this camera is average, and the video capabilities are average as well, with the ability to shoot up to 640 x 480 videos with sound.

The Nikon Coolpix S200 comes packaged with the following items:

    • EN-EL10  Li-ion Rechargeable Battery with Charger
    • USB Cable
    • AV Cable
    • Camera Strap
    • Software (Picture Perfect 1.7)
    • Camera Case (not included in some areas)

The S200 comes equipped with 20 MB of internal memory.  This camera is SD/SDHC card compatible, and I would recommend purchasing a 2 or 4 GB memory card for it.  The leather case is not available in all countries, but it can be purchased separately.  The camera case looks nice, and includes a clip for clipping it on your belt.
