Nikon CoolPix P80 Camera - Design

The design of the Nikon CoolPix P80 includes a mini DSLR (digital single lens reflex) format that seems to be common with many other ultra-zoom cameras in its class. The camera itself is quite light and compact, but do not let that fool you. The Nikon CoolPix P80 is well-built and solid, which is what you would expect from a respected and highly regarded camera manufacturer like Nikon.

Nikon claims that the CoolPix P80 is the smallest ultra-zoom camera on the market right now that has an 18x lens. The P80 fits comfortably in a jacket pocket, fanny pack or smaller purse.

The ergonomics of the CoolPix P80 are user-friendly; the camera feels comfortable in your hands and has a good solid grip to it despite its smaller size thanks to a tacky material that Nikon added to the camera's outer surface. The controls on the P80 are spaced properly as well. To access certain popular controls such as image quality, ISO, and white balance, however you must go to the internal menu as there are no controls dedicated to these highly used settings. The internal menu is user-friendly, though, and is highly intuitive with little to no learning curve.

There is nothing flashy about the CoolPix P80's appearance as it is black in color with a fairly plain plastic surface, but it is a camera meant for picture taking and not a table ornament, so its style or lack thereof is really not of much consequence. Nikon supplies purchasers of the P80 with a camera strap, a lens cap with cord, battery and charger, USB and A/V cables, a quick start guide, CD-ROM software, and a user's manual.
