Casio Exilim EX-S880 YouTube Digital Camera - Design

    Design

I've always liked the design of the Exilim-series of cameras by Canon, and this one is no different. The S880 is very sleek and slim, and it is very well put together. The body of the S880 comes in two different colors: red and black. The camera's dimensions are 3.72 x 2.38 x .68 inches, and it weighs in at only 4.5 ounces without the battery (the battery adds about another ounce). The camera's small body is not only attractive, but puts it in the category of a pocket camera.

The control layout of the S880 is very similar to its predecessor's. The front of the camera sports the same 35 mm-114 mm equivalent lens. The lens aperture is f/2.7-f/5.2, and the lens is capable of 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. These numbers are pretty typical of other cameras in this price range, although you can find 5x optical zoom cameras for about the same price.

Looking at the business end of the S880, you will first see the 2.8 inch TFT
color LCD display with over 230,000 pixels (960 x 240). The display is up to par with the competition, and is a good size for such a small camera. Next to the display you will find the few controls on this device, which is very similar to the set-up on the S770. The main controller is a  small joystick, which is used to navigate the menu system of the camera. There is also a dedicated button for data storage, and a dedicated button for the YouTube feature. The button configuration is very basic, and it is very much like other Exilims already on the market.

I like the sleek body of the S880 very much, but there are not enough new design features to set this one apart from previous Exilim-series cameras. Size, lens, and button configuration are very similar to previous models, especially the S770. It almost seems like Casio is relying on the marketing of the new YouTube feature to sell this one.  After all, the S880 is basically an S770 wrapped in sheep's clothing.
