Canon SD870 IS - Features
Features
This camera is chock-full of features, most of which were in its predecessor. One of the best features of this camera is the Digic III processor, which offers a host of new functions as well as accelerated performance. This processor is among the fastest ones on the market right now. This tiny chip inside the SD870 helps the camera perform great, and it also helps boost image quality and battery life.
This Canon offers some great automatic features such as the face detection technology. This feature allows the user to focus in on multiple faces, and locks in on them even if they move. Another automatic feature is the exposure feature which automatically gives you the best exposure, white balance, etc. for each shot that you take. A new flash compensation feature is built into this camera as well. This feature adjusts the amount of flash according to how much flash is actually needed for a particular shot.
Canon has used their iSAPS technology (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) in the SD870. This feature automatically adjusts focus, white balance, distance, and more to get the best looking shot possible in each individual situation. The automatic features of the SD870 are very impressive, and they help to make this camera easy to use, even for beginners.

This camera offers ISO levels of up to 1600 for low-light shots. There is also a collection of 17 shooting modes, which is pretty standard in digital cameras these days. Manual features include 5 preset white balance modes, selectable light metering, and ISO settings.
This camera has a sufficient zoom range of 3.8x optical zoom and another 4x digital zoom. I would have liked to see 5x optical zoom from a camera of this price, but the 3.8x is okay. The image stabilization (IS) integrated into this camera is one of the best on the market; it makes long range shots a lot less blurry. The IS system in the SD870 is optical, not digital, so you won't see a loss in image quality as you would in most digital image stabilization systems.
This feature also comes in handy when using the SD870's movie mode, which captures movies in VGA (640 x 480) or QVGA (320 x 240). The movie mode will capture videos at 30 or 15 frames per second with sound. This camera will record video at half the file size of normal cameras but with the same resolution and fps, which means that these files will take up much less space on the memory card. By the way, this camera is compatible with SD, SDHC, and MMC memory cards.
