Canon Powershot S5 IS - Features

Probably the biggest feature of this camera is the super zoom capability at 12x optical.  What makes this feature even better is the optical image stabilizer which is incorporated into the S5.  This means that the user can take long-range shots that are relatively stable, without too much blurriness caused by camera shake.

The new Digic III processor also includes face-detection technology, which helps immensely with group photos.  The S5 can detect up to three faces and focus in on them.  This feature can also be used during video mode.  Speaking of video mode, the S5 makes video easy by placing a dedicated video record button on the rear of the camera.  The S5 also has a built-in microphone to record sound during these videos.

The ISO capability of the S5 is sufficient and ranges from ISO 80-1600.  This make low-light shots easier, and is great when flash cannot be used, such as at concerts or other events where flash is not allowed.

The S5 offers 13 different shooting modes including snow, beach, night, and fireworks.  There are also three different special effects in this camera which include my colors, color swap, and color accent.  These can be used for in-camera editing of images to give them a custom look.  Another good in-camera option is the red-eye reduction feature which can be used to fix red-eye issues directly on the camera.

White balance can be set by the user to custom, preset, or automatic.  There are six presets which include flash, cloudy, daylight, fluorescent, tungsten light, and fluorescent light (daylight).

The flash on this camera is a pop-up that has an effective range of 1.6-17 feet, which is pretty good.  For users who have the need for more flash power, an external flash accessory may be purchased separately (item number HF-DC1).

Although a 32 MB memory card is included, it is highly recommended that you purchase a 2 or 4 GB card for better performance.  This card will cost less than $50.
