Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Super Zoom - Performance
(Page 4 of 4 )
Performance and Image Quality
The SX100 has some performance issues that consist of relatively slow shooting speeds. The typical shot-to-shot times (no flash) for the SX100 are just under 2 seconds between photos. This figure puts the SX100 in the middle of the pack when compared with other super-zooms. The biggest issue that I have with the performance of the SX100 is when enabling the flash and then taking a look at shot-to-shot performance numbers. CNet labs reported a flash-enabled shot-to-shot time for the SX100 of 4.3 seconds between shots! I don't know that I have seen a figure that high since I started reviewing digital cameras. Other than that one startling figure, the SX100 performs about average in terms of speed.
Battery life capacity is decent in the SX100. This camera accepts AA batteries and not a rechargeable battery pack. You can expect to get about 400 shots from 2 AA batteries, or 600 minutes of video playback. Of course, these numbers vary according to use of the device.
The image quality that the SX100 is capable of is a different story. Anyone who has owned a Canon digital camera in the past couple of years knows the high quality photos of which they are capable. The SX100 produces excellent quality photos with vivid colors and very minimal camera noise up to ISO800. Long-range shots are also among the best in its class with minimal blurring or loss in detail. The only very minor aspect of the SX100's image quality is some slight magenta, yellow, and purple fringing in photos. Take a look at the image quality test results from www.popphoto.com. These results indicate that the SX100 produces outstanding quality photos.

For people on the fence with this camera, I think you just need to decide which is more important to you--a camera with great speed and performance, or a camera that produces excellent quality images. If you chose "excellent quality images," then the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS would be a great choice for you. If you are looking for a speedy super-zoom, you'll have to look elsewhere.
