    Canon PowerShot SD890 IS

The SD890 IS is the latest addition to a very successful line of highly functional and affordable cameras from Canon. This newest camera brings back many of the power-packed features of the SD line and adds a few new ones to offer an even more versatile and powerful picture-taking experience. Today we'll take a look at the camera and see if it lives up to its predecessors.

    Introduction

Although the SD890 has not hit the market with as large of a splash as its predecessor, the SD850, it does offer a far more impressive feature set, albeit with a larger price tag. Interestingly, rather than simply improving upon the highly successful SD850, Canon chose to redesign a great deal of the SD890. The result is impressive: a far more powerful device which, though it has some setbacks, exceeds expectations rather than meeting them.

One keynote of the Canon SD line is that its style, versatility, and power make it a must-have for anyone that has a bit of a sweet tooth for technology. The line has been perfect for the consumer who finds they need more than a simple low-quality point-and-shoot camera but isn’t willing to shell out thousands of dollars for a professional camera.

The SD890 exemplifies the qualities of the rest of the line by improving upon every aspect. It takes style to a new level with its unique and sleek curve. Developments in its image stabilization technology allow it to be used in incredibly low-light settings. Its 5x optical zoom and 10 megapixel resolution give it an edge over almost every other camera in its class. According to Canon's website, the SD890’s features allow it to “not only deliver ultra-impressive image quality, but make the entire experience fun, exciting, and creatively rewarding.”

In addition to the overwhelming features of the SD890, it is host to more than one or two obvious weaknesses which open it to criticism from more particular users. Slightly larger than average size, slow capture speed, clumsy menu navigation, narrow lens size, inaccurate viewfinder, and awkward design all combine to offer some doubts as to the true value of the SD890 in a line of a cameras which have all stood out for designs which offer few to no flaws.

Despite these setbacks, the SD890 does offer a great value in and of itself, if not in comparison to all of its predecessors. The developments in this latest model combine to offer a unique device which blows away its competition in many regards but falls woefully short in others.
