Canon PowerShot SD790 IS - Performance

As with the rest of the camera's aspects, some of the PowerShot SD790 IS's performance points are very good while others just do not compare well to the industry standard. The camera can wake up and shoot in 1.2 seconds, which is pretty good. It takes 0.4 seconds to focus and shoot in optimal lighting and just 0.5 seconds to do the same in suboptimal lighting.

Unfortunately, the SD790 falls behind in time between shots, requiring 2 seconds to take two pictures. If you include flash, then the time between two pictures is a full 3.5 seconds. The SD790 performs burst shooting at the rate of 1.3 frames per second, which is about average. The battery for the camera is rated to last for 330 shots, which is actually relatively good for a compact digital camera.

The 3 inch LCD screen is big enough to be easily viewed and offers enough brightness to work well even in bright daylight. However, the default brightness is not enough for bright ambient lighting, so you will have to raise the screen's brightness to the point that it may significantly cut into the battery's life. The screen only offers 230,000 pixels and may appear a little grainy to anyone who is concerned with the quality of the LCD.

The actual photo quality of the PowerShot SD790 IS is incredible. In reality, the SD790 would be an average-or worse-camera if it were not for the great photos that it took. In every single aspect of photo quality, the SD790 has the very top rating (or close to it) among all of its competitors in the compact digital camera class. Fortunately for the SD790, photo quality is the most important aspect of a digital camera. The excellent marks of the SD790 in photo quality make it worth much more than its $300 price tag.

In summary, although the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS does not offer the absolute best in every category for its class, it does well enough in most of them. If you are looking for a middle-of-the-line compact digital camera that will produce photos with excellent quality, then you really cannot go wrong by picking this new Canon digital camera.
