Canon PowerShot SD10 Review - Conclusion

The image quality of the photos produced by the SD10 is very good. The quickshot feature sacrifices minor detail for speed, but a simple touch of a button turns the feature off. The SD10's small flash is very effective at close distances, outdoor shots are evenly bright, digital zoom works well, and macro mode is simply incredible. Colors are all very accurate, no matter what the photo conditions are, and this is with the automatic settings. The SD10 is fairly responsive as well, especially with quickshot on - making it easy to take spontaneous shots and shots of moving objects. Measuring from power-on till first shot captured with quickshot on and no flash was under three seconds.

Though the SD10 lacks an optical viewfinder to save space, the 1.5" LCD screen is bright enough to be used in direct sunlight. Unfortunately you won't be able to disable the LCD screen to save power, but then again the SD10's battery life is really good. It lasted over 100 photos and a lot of time spent in picture mode or as the viewfinder. And it only takes about two hours to fully charge a battery.

The SD10 can also record movies with sound for up to three minutes long, which is incredible for such a small camera to begin with.

    Pros

    • Excellent image quality
    • Small, sturdy, and stylish metal construction
    • 4 Megapixels, 5.7x digital zoom
    • Focus assist light (also used for red eye protection)
    • Awesome macro mode
    • LCD screen is very bright
    • Movie and sound recording

    Cons

    • No optical zoom
    • No optical viewfinder
    • No raw file support
    • No Linux support

Within the realm of digital cameras, Canon has produced something very special. The SD10 maximizes resolution and power under the constraints of style and size. Being one of the worlds smallest four mega pixel digital cameras, the SD10 is a great still image camera for beginners because of its ease of use with automatic settings. But the SD10 also offers a range of manual adjustments which help the more experienced user combat more unusual shooting conditions. Overall, the SD10 hosts the power, quality, and function of the Canon PowerShot series while bringing form to a whole new level.
