Canon PowerShot SD10 Review - Image Quality
(Page 5 of 7 )
The images the SD10 produces are incredible for such a small camera. Colors are the most life-like I've ever seen, and the Super Macro Mode is just incredible. For still images, I tested the SD10's flash, quickshot mode, digital zoom, and macro mode. All pictures were taken at 2272 x 1704 fine compression.

The first picture is with flash, the second without, both pictures taken with regular sunlight at noon coming through the windows. Notice how the flash only slightly changes the brightness of the floor, and does not distort colors at all.
In the following two pictures, flash is on for both, but only the first picture has quickshot enabled.

First, notice how quickshot affects the quality of the flash. With quickshot off, flash produces a much clearer, brighter image. Look at this comparison of the bottom-left corners at 1:1 zoom:

Both shots have a little bit of noise, but noise is more prominent with quickshot. The following picture is outdoors, with quickshot off.

Some digital cameras have a problem with outdoor shots where the corners are slightly darker than the rest of the image. The SD10 does not have this problem. Here is a portion of the picture at 1:1 zoom:

The following two shots are at 2.2x and 5.7x digital zoom respectively.

At 2272 x 1704, the pictures look terrible. But once resized, even the 5.7x zoomed picture looks decent. With the SD10, digitally zoomed pictures will still make decent photos. And finally, Super Macro Mode:

The SD10's macro mode supports focusing 1.2 to 4 inches away from the object. Both of these images were taken with the SD10 approximately one inch away from the object. As you can see the SD10's macro mode is near perfect; very impressive stuff.
The SD10 captures movies at 15 frames per second in either 320x240 or 160x120 for up to three minutes long, all with sound. This is better than a lot of other cameras that only record clips for 30 seconds. A special Replay Function lets you fast forward, rewind and even edit out unwanted scenes directly on the SD10. And the SD10's speaker lets you hear sound while playing back a movie. Also, the SD10 can record voice memos of up to 60 seconds long and attach them to still images.
