Affordable HD Camcorders Hit the Market - Samsung SC-HMX10

Samsung’s SC-HMX10 is perhaps the most attractively priced of all HD camcorders. Sure, it was stated previously that consumers should be wary of devices being sold for less than $500, but that mostly applies to cameras being sold by companies with virtually no brand recognition to speak of and that perform well below average.

Aside from being a reputable and respected company, Samsung offers a number of very high-quality HD camcorders. With a price range of between $287.95 and $445.00 , the SC-HMX10 is a decent HD camcorder, though it’s definitely not one of the top contenders. After all, you get what you pay for …

It’s not that Samsung’s SC-HMX10 doesn’t offer a lot given its price range; the SC-HMX10 includes 720p video, 8 GB built-in-memory, manual exposure controls and microphone input. That being said, it’s sometimes painfully apparent where Samsung cut corners in order to price their product so competitively -- namely, by neglecting optical image stabilization, eschewing 1080i video and by using a small 1/4.5-inch sensor.

Despite these setbacks, the device has a lot of potential. At only 13 ounces, the camera is light, compact and has an incredibly attractive and functional design. The device’s touch-screen interface isn’t very easy to work with, but its menus are organized very well. With a little more work, Samsung can have one of the most affordable, successful HD camcorders on the market, though until then, consumers will have to decide if they’re willing to take a chance on Samsung’s most current model.
