Toshiba Qosmio G55-Q802 Laptop - Features

The most notable feature of the Toshiba Qosmio G55-Q802 is Toshiba's Gesture Controller. This technology is based on the typical hardware feature: a 1.3 MP web camera. The camera in and of itself is not impressive; it is just a web cam. However, the web cam will allow users of the G55-Q802 to do something pretty neat: gestures.

The idea behind Toshiba's gestures software is that you can do anything that you can do with the mouse with Gestures. For instance, with the web cam and software activated, you can raise your hand and clench a fist, and you will activate the mouse control. By raising your thumb, you are left clicking. This feature is pretty original and sounds pretty great.

Unfortunately, according toPC Magazine, the gestures software is really not as impressive as it is cracked up to be. The reviewer could not get the gestures to work a good 50 percent of the time, and was forced to resort to normal mouse usage. Of course, there really is not that much of an advantage to using these mouse gestures over a normal mouse. Honestly, it is a little hard to think of how this feature might actually be practical.

One of the "media PC" features of the G55-Q802 is a DVD "up-convert" feature. Although the laptop lacks the ability to play Blu-ray movies, this feature does somewhat make up for that lack. The idea is that you just press the "up-convert" button and the movie-playing software will improve the quality of the movie so that it looks like a true HD movie on your laptop.

Of course, you really have to weigh the fact that the G55-Q802 is truly not an HD laptop. The resolution sported by the display does not go up to true HD levels, and there is no ability to play HD discs. Apparently, Toshiba is having a difficult time accepting that its HD DVD technology lost out to Sony's Blu-ray and is not yet ready to switch over all of its technology investments.

Another great feature of the G55-Q802 is its readily available and accessible media ports. It also comes with a full 500 GB of storage space, which should prove to be much more than enough to store all of the videos that you could possibly need.
