If you are searching for a new desktop, then today is your lucky day, as we will take a look at two varied selections in the genre. First up is the HP Pavilion Slimline 5520y, a budget desktop available in a retail configuration. We will follow it up with the more expensive and configurable Dell Studio XPS 8000 and its great design.
HP Pavilion Slimline 5220y desktop
The HP Pavilion Slimline 5220y is a budget desktop that you can find in a fixed configuration on the retail end. It has just the basics that one would need for a desktop. It is intended strictly for casual usage, and not for those looking for a high performance machine. You can pick up the HP Pavilion Slimline 5220y for an affordable price of $479.99.
Considering that itís a budget desktop, do not expect blazing performance from the fixed retail configuration of the Pavilion Slimline 5220y. Then again, as with anything budget, you canít really expect to have the best, as you get what you pay for. It comes with a 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium E5300 processor with 2 MB of L2 cache. It also comes with 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM to allow you to multitask on the computer and run different applications at once.
While the Slimline 5220y isnít exactly a top performance machine, it should suffice for those casual users who want a desktop for Internet browsing, checking email, working on documents, and looking at media. You can probably get away with some occasional gaming as well. For graphics, you get an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 card. Thereís plenty of storage available for your music and other files with the included 640 GB hard drive. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit is the operating system that comes loaded onto the desktop.
If you do happen to enjoy working on computers yourself and want to ramp up the performance or features of the Slimline 5220y, your options are quite limited. As for what is available, you do have access to two vacant 1x PCI Express slots and one 16x PCI graphics slot. Unfortunately, there is no room to upgrade the RAM or the hard drive, so you are stuck with the 4 GB of RAM and the 640 GB of memory that come with the desktop.
