The Asus Eee PC 900: a Preview - A Note About Linux
(Page 4 of 4 )
I have to admit I am not a big Linux fan, which will surely get me some bad reviews. I firmly believe that just because a company makes a lot of money (Microsoft), that does not mean the company is evil. Unless the world is full of idiots (okay, it is) a company can't become successful selling an inferior product. If McDonald's sold cardboard, their signs would say "100 served" instead of a trillion.
That being said, I was impressed with the Linux version, not only because of the added storage, but because of the easy operating system (the same as the 700 series) and the forty software programs that come installed on the 900 series. You can find programs like Firefox (of course), the OpenOffice suite, and even a media player. What more do you need?
Conclusion
Keeping in mind the two companies' vision of allowing people in every country the opportunity to own a PC, the Eee PC 900 sub-laptop is a pretty good computer. I do I find it odd to buy this computer, when you can simply spend $500 for a Dell with a better processor and bigger screen. Maybe I am just missing the point. Can you get a Dell with an SSD drive for that cheap? I don't know. Probably not. But I would rather have an 80GB traditional drive than a puny 20GB drive, even if the 80GB is slower and prone to dying.
All in all, if you like small gadgets, and the next big thing, then by all means, this sub-laptop with the full laptop price is probably just right for you.
