Lenovo IdeaPad S12-2959 and the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge - IdeaPad Design

Beyond the core components, the Lenovo IdeaPad S12-2959 does provide some extras. 802.11b/g Wi-Fi is included, so that you can connect to available wireless networks while on the go. Bluetooth 2.1 is also on board, so you can connect the IdeaPad S12-2959 to other Bluetooth-enabled devices without the need for wires. The integrated 1.3-megapixel webcam and microphone come in handy for those who enjoy video chatting with friends. The webcam also works in conjunction with facial recognition software to give you added security without the need for a password.

For quick data transfers with other devices like digital cameras, there's a 4-in-1 media card reader. The reader supports formats such as SD cards, Memory Sticks, and more. Unfortunately, you won't get to pop your favorite DVDs or CDs into the netbook, as there is no optical drive. This is to be expected, though, as netbooks sacrifice such luxuries to save space and increase portability.

The design of the Lenovo IdeaPad S12-2959 is demure and unassuming for the most part. It won't attract many glances, but it's far from ugly. The lid does add a little bit of flair, with a dot-patterned scheme that is covered in glossy black. You can also get the IdeaPad S12-2959 in a white color scheme if you prefer.

The only real negative to the glossy lid is that it collects a lot of fingerprints, so keep a cloth handy if you get easily annoyed by this. As expected, the IdeaPad S12-2959 is quite portable, weighing only 3.5 pounds and measuring just 11.5 inches wide by 9.1 inches deep by 1.4 inches thick.

Flipping the lid open reveals a 12.1-inch LCD display with 1,280x800 resolution that is surrounded by a glossy black bezel. The display is a good size for a netbook and adds a little more room for browsing websites and viewing multimedia. Unfortunately, the screen has a glossy finish, so some irritating glare issues might surface from time to time.

Other than that, the display does produce solid graphics and color. The keyboard on the IdeaPad S12-2959 is well-sized and comfortable to type with. The same can be said for the touch pad, and both employ a matte black covering that adds a nice grip.

Finishing up the design elements of the IdeaPad S12-2959 are its connectivity options. The right side houses a HDMI port, microphone and headphone jacks, a VGA port, an Ethernet port, and a USB port. The left side houses two more USB ports and the aforementioned media card reader.

While the Lenovo IdeaPad S12-2959 definitely has its positives, its main negative, its high price, holds it back. Simply put, for the same performance, you can find a cheaper netbook. Or, even better, you can get a full-sized laptop for the same $650 price tag. Then again, if you do value portability, and appreciate the improved graphics support that the IdeaPad S12-2959 provides, you may be tempted enough to buy it.
